McKinley’s social justice awards honor unsung heroes in the cause of social justice in our community.
At this year’s virtual event, awards will be given to honor social justice work in Champaign county. Especially in this time of COVID-19 and social unrest, this year’s winners have risen to meet the needs of our community. They are:
- Centennial High School Key Club, for 20 years of service and promoting volunteerism to students
- Salt & Light, for fighting poverty with dignity
- Lucia Maldonado, for building bridges between the Latino community and the larger Champaign-Urbana area
- Ayan Harris, Naomi Dupree, Mayahuel Gutiérrez Malik, Taylor Blackwell, and Isabela Lleras, for founding Paign to Peace and organizing successful protests against racism and cultural appropriation
In addition to these annual awards, a special lifetime award will be given to Esther Patt, and a community impact award will be given to the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.
