Announcing the 2016 Social Justice Awards

On May 7, 2016, the McKinley Foundation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will hold its Seventh Annual Social Justice Gala. This event will recognize persons and organizations in Champaign County for advancing a cause of social justice. The four awards will be presented to a student, a student organization, a community individual, and a community organization.

The McKinley Foundation seeks nominations of individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional dedication to social justice locally, nationally, or internationally, and whose work has resulted in greater awareness of injustice and improved the lives of those who have suffered unjustly. All nominees must reside in or be based in Champaign County. If you know of an individual or organization meeting these criteria, please complete the attached form and write a short essay describing the nominee’s goals, activities, and accomplishments and send both documents by February 19 2016. There is no entry fee and the form is straightforward. We welcome self-nominations.

A $500 gift will be presented to the winners of the Student Organization and Community Organization awards, and to organizations chosen by the winners of the Student and Community Individual awards. All nominees will have an opportunity to showcase their work at the Gala in May.

For nearly a century, the McKinley Foundation and McKinley Presbyterian Church have sought to live out faith and socially conscious convictions through social justice work and service.

The efforts of the Foundation and Church have included civil rights and racial equality advocacy in the 1950s and 60s; support for the Vietnam peace movement and military draft resistance; the resettlement of Laotian refugee families; support for daycare for low-income families (later known as the Marilyn Q. Child Care Center); the creation of a clothing exchange for students and the community; support for Central Americans seeking political asylum; housing the Men’s Winter Emergency Shelter; the full inclusion of GLBT people in the life of the Church; international mission exchanges; sponsorship of other community churches; and, more recently, housing the Graduate Employee Organization, Illinois Federation of Teachers, and the Goals Project for teen parents, and building Presby Hall, an environmentally state-of-the-art student residence.
